CA BOCES CTE Center at Belmont Hosts Safety Event, Career Fair

Belmont, NY – May 14, 2022 – On Saturday, May 14, students from CA BOCES CTE Center at Belmont’s Heavy Equipment and Natural Resources programs received a day of safety training and industry careers exploration.

As a part of the event, students were presented with emergency, on-the-job scenarios that included a trench cave in, utility strike, and a confined space entrapment. These scenarios provided an opportunity to teach students how to avoid accidents and what procedures should be followed in the event an accident does occur on a construction site.

Local EMT/fire personnel were on site to assist with the accident recovery procedures while sharing their training and skills.

In addition to the safety training, several local contractors were also on hand to speak with students and discuss future career opportunities within their company.

CA BOCES CTE Heavy Equipment Instructor and event coordinator, Derek Decker, said the event was important for student learning and future career success. “Training like this is so important as students head toward future careers in the construction industry,” he said. “We teach safety from the first day of our programs, but the experience of stepping outside the classroom and learning additionally from those active in the field is invaluable.”

Decker additionally thanked those who assisted with the event. “The CA BOCES safety committee, local contractors, along with our local EMT/Fire personal put lots of time and energy into this event,” he said. “We are grateful for their support and hope that the event helps open up conversations with students’ contractors, and EMT/ Fire personal about safely working in their local communities.”

CA BOCES CTE Center at Belmont Launches New Greenhouse Project

Belmont, NY – April 29, 2022 – Several classes and departments at the CA BOCES CTE Center at Belmont have been working cooperatively to bring a new greenhouse project to life.

The greenhouse, which is attached to the center, has been seeing new life over the past few months as various classes and staff members worked to get it repurposed. It currently has two active garden beds that students work on, along with an aquaponic tank and system used to fertilize the beds.

CA BOCES CTE Students Explore Careers with New York State Department of Transportation

Ellicottville, NY – April 6, 2022 – On Friday, April 1, students from the CA BOCES CTE Center at Ellicottville’s Heavy Equipment Operations, Collision Repair Technology and Power Equipment Technology programs received a day of industry careers exploration with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).

Representatives from the NYSDOT spent the day with students discussing potential career paths available in their fields of study. The DOT also brought equipment to the center for student training and exposure including several mechanical training aids and a plow/sander truck.

Sponsored by SUNY Cobleskill’s Workforce Development Outreach Project, the students participated in a hands-on training to reinforce diesel engine electrical diagnostics, air brake and drivetrain fundamentals, along with basic plow truck operation.

Outreach Instructors from SUNY Cobleskill’s Agricultural Engineering Department facilitated the day of career exposure. The main goal of the SUNY Cobleskill Workforce Development Outreach Project is to foster and build connections between students, educators, and industry.  The driving force behind this project is to educate and encourage young adults to enter the agricultural / construction / transportation equipment repair fields, as a shortage currently exists and is projected to increase in the future.
