Unit
Overview
This kit
is especially designed for students in middle school to participate in
an engineering design experience. Students
use this kit to problem solve and create a design to address a
particular need, in this case, a new design for a moving toy. A
variety of activities prepare students to define the problem, identity
parameters, determine the "customers", and establish
objectives. Students
develop a proposal and a prototype for their design. Designs
are built and tested, then the models are finalized based on test
results. Students
are building knowledge through inquiry-based activities to develop
understanding of scientific phenomenon (force, friction, gears,
levers) and mathematical concepts (ratio, proportion) involved in
creating their design. Students
work in teams to complete the tasks in the kit. For more information on
